Summary:

The Lead APP Supervisor is responsible for the oversite of the Advanced Practice Provider First Assistant Operational Activity and Clinical performance. This role works in collaboration with Surgeons across both campuses to provide adequate coverage and support as required. The role is responsible for the daily operational and clinical activity of the first assistant team. The position is responsible for the coordination of Physician Assistant Surgical student surgical clinical activity. The Physician Assistant Supervisor performs clinical duties working across all surgical specialties.

The Lead APP Supervisor is a dependent health care provider who, working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary health team, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients. All duties and responsibilities must be accomplished with the guidelines of the established protocols and in accordance with the Physician Written Practice Agreement as required by New York State. The Lead APP Supervisor is additionally responsible for creating and managing the mid-level surgical support service and managing operating room first assistants. Daily duties will include ensuring operating room first assistant availability, coordinating the surgical mid-level hiring process and on-boarding of new mid-levels in collaboration with the medical staff offices. Administrative duties will also include the oversight of hiring, termination/disciplinary action and professional growth and development of APPs within department. This role also entails first assisting in the operating room for multiple surgical specialties including general, vascular, orthopedics, plastics, GYN, neurologyand thoracic.

Areas of responsibility include emergency room coverage for consultation and initial interventions, response to inpatient floor calls, facilitating patient preparation for admission and/or surgery. All duties and responsibilities must be accomplished with the guidelines of the established protocols and in accordance with the Physician Written Practice Agreement as required by New York State.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • Licensed Physician Assistant in New York State or current New York State Professional RN License
  • Graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree as a Physician Assistant or Completion of an accredited program for Nurse Practitioners
  • Infection Control Training certificate as required by New York State
  • Board Certification by NCCPA required
  • Meets credentialing requirements as appropriate through the Medical Staff office

EXPERIENCE

  • Three-year surgical assisting experience required


KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities in a stressful situation
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good mental and physical health.
  • Knowledge of surgical anatomy, physiology, patho-physiology, and operative technique related to the operative procedures
  • Ability to perform effectively in stressful and emergency situations.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards and initiate appropriate preventive and corrective action.
  • Ability to perform effectively and harmoniously as a member of the team.
  • Participates in educational conferences and upgrades and maintains professional knowledge and skills related to the area of responsibility,
  • Maintains confidentiality and understands the legal aspects of the job function, adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Role includes a variety of problems to be solved under general guidelines, and calls for a variety of decisions, some of which are complex and must be referred to a resource person.
  • Assists in directing a small group of employees performing similar or related tasks of a semi-skilled nature.
  • Computer literate

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Respond to surgical on-call emergencies
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases
  • On-call coverage.

VACCINE REQUIREMENTS

  • Effective January 1st 2022, you must be fully vaccinated with an FDA COVID-19 vaccination and provide proof of your vaccination status as part of your new employee pre-boarding. Exceptions to the COVID-19 vaccination requirement may be granted for medical reasons.
