Summary:
Cancer Registrar maintains components of the Cancer Registry and the computerized data collection system for cancer cases consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and accreditation requirements paying special attention to compliance with the American College of Surgeons' requirements for an approved program. Abstracts and codes clinical data using the ELEKTA IMPAC METRIQ software, obtains long-term follow-up data, and analyzes health records according to standards. Processes, maintains, compiles and reports this health information data. While working at non-CoC-approved facilities, the Cancer Registrar abstracts all cancer cases deemed reportable to the New York State Cancer Registry in accordance with the Cancer Research Improvement Act of 1997, using the Abstract Plus software.
Responsibilities:
EDUCATION- Associate Degree in Health Information Technology with RHIT credentials or a Bachelor Degree in Health Information Administration with RHIA credentials is preferred
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) credentials required. CTR-eligible candidates will be considered with the agreement that if hired, the employee must sit for the first scheduled CTR exam after the one year anniversary of hire date and must pass this exam within 2 tries
- Maintains credentials by meeting NCRA's continuing education requirements
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) Credentials/or CTR eligible required
- RHIT or RHIA Credentials or eligible preferred
EXPERIENCE- Six (6) - twelve (12) months experience is preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL ABILITY- Thorough knowledge of ICD-O-3 coding, AJCC staging, and SEER Summary Staging
- Knowledge of FORDS manual standards
- Computer literate, knowledge & experience with Abstract Plus and IMPAC Medical Registry Services (MRS) software preferred
- Ability to read medical record documents and utilize computer to enter demographic, diagnostic, procedural and follow up data throughout the day
- Must possess good communication skills
WORKING CONDITIONS- Individual works in an office setting utilizing computer to enter cancer registry data. NYS driver's license and transportation is required. Individual required to travel between the four hospitals of Catholic Health
