Work Schedule: Days Evenings Nights with Weekend and Holiday Rotation

Hours: 8a-9p or 8p-9a

Summary:

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is a nurse, who, through clinical experience, study and supervised practice in patient care at the master's level, has gained expertise in a specific specialty area of patient care services. Advance Practice Provider expectations will include rotation through Mercy Hospital of Buffalo (MHB) Level II, Sisters of Charity (SOCH) Level III NICU and the Level I Nursery at Mount St. Mary's Hospital Maternity. The provider will work to their professional scope per the Level of Nursery they are working in at the time of their shift.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION

  • Master's degree in Nursing required
  • Must be a graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program within specialty area
  • Must hold current New York State Registered Nurse registration or be eligible for licensure in New York State and a current Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant New York State license.
  • National certification required within 6 months from date of hire: NCC certification as NNP and/or ACNN for PNP
  • Academic profile submitted to hospital for annual credentialing

EXPERIENCE

  • Previous Pediatric and Neonatal Nursing experience strongly preferred
  • Previous Nurse Practitioner or Advance Practice Provider experience preferred
  • Maintains knowledge of best practice in area of specialty

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Demonstrates the advanced knowledge, skills and credentialing required to function independently in an advanced practice and expanded role.
  • Demonstrated clinical competence and in depth knowledge in specialty area
  • Demonstrates the responsibility and accountability for the assessment and management of patients, including ordering diagnostic tests, consultations, therapeutic interventions and the day to day implementation and evaluation of an appropriate plan of care.As an advanced practitioner, the APP is essential to the case management of patients with specialized health needs.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work in collaboration with the attending physician, primary nurse and other health care providers to provide family centered care.
  • The APP is responsible for, and assists in, the development and application of specialty practice standards and research to enhance the quality of care to the patient and the patient's family.
  • The APP will provide care to the high-risk neonate as dictated by the needs of the CH Pool and Hospital.
  • Creates a collegial and collaborative environment among all members of the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrated effective leadership, teaching, research and communication skills.
  • Demonstrates responsibility and accountability for decisions.
  • Utilizes problem-solving and decision making skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to coach and mentor staff at their respective level.
  • Ability to assist with research and development of specialty specific practice standards and communicates them to other staff in their area of specialty.
  • Ability to identify problems, collects data, establishes facts, and draws valid conclusions.
  • Ability to improve job performance through continuing education.
  • Ability to provide comprehensive care for the normal and high risk newborn and family
  • Ability to attend high risk deliveries and render appropriate care in the delivery room
  • Ability to collaborate with the Neonatologist concerning all pertinent history, physical findings, diagnostic and therapeutic treatments or procedures in a timely manner
  • Ability to record and document, appropriately, all care and procedures rendered.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other Mid-level providers, Nursing, Pediatricians, Obstetricians, Chair of Pediatrics and other support staff to assure a high degree of quality and continuity of care.
  • Ability to perform emergency neonatal resuscitation and stabilization of the ill newborn in accordance with the guidelines provided by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Neonatal Resuscitation Program (Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation, 8th Edition)
  • Ability to communicate with and counsel parents during their infant's hospital stay
  • Ability to perform discharge assessment, arrange follow-up plans and communicate plans in discharge summary
  • Ability to integrate legal, performance improvement and ethical principles into the practice of newborn care.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The APP is expected to work on a rotating basis to include nights/days, weekends and holidays
  • The APP job performance will include rotating coverage through NB nursery, Level II, Level III NICU and Level I Nursery.
  • APP work hours will not exceed the guaranteed/required work hours as per hospital policy for per diem and/or part time or full time employees.
