Summary:
Provides daily nursing care to patients/residents following established policies, procedures, and standards of practice.

The Nurse Residency position offers training, education and professional development through a six (6) to twelve (12) month transition to becoming an RN in the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), or Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). The nurse resident systematically and continuously assists in the collection and assessment of data in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to provide therapeutic care for the patient and/or family. He/she assist in performing all required elements of the nursing assessment including but not limited to physical examination, assessment of readiness to learn, psychosocial assessment, functional assessment and utilization of patient/family specific assessment scale as required. The Nurse Resident is an active member of the multidisciplinary team in assist in the collaboration in the development, execution and evaluation of the multidisciplinary plan of care or critical pathway. The nurse resident considers factors related to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering care. The nurse resident's decisions and actions on behalf of patients are determined in an ethical manner.

The nurse resident assist in establishing goals and strategies for meeting the discharge or continued care needs of the patient, family, and/or other care provider. The nurse resident provides care in collaboration with other nursing staff members in accordance with nurse practice act and the professional nursing role.

The nurse resident utilizes research findings in his/her practice. He/she demonstrates knowledge of and participates in improving organizational performance activities. The nurse resident acquires and maintains knowledge in nursing practice and assumes responsibility for the professional development of self.

Nurse Resident Goals

The Nurse Residency program is a series of learning and work experiences designed to assist nursing graduates as a transition into the first professional role and become leaders in patient care delivery. Transition experiences have an emphasis on the development of clinical and leadership skills for the novice/beginner nurse to be successful as a competent RN. Components of the program include in-depth development of resident leadership skills, analysis of evidence through review of the literature, applications of outcome data to patient care improvement, and professional development and coaching to clinical success.

At the conclusion of the residency, the graduate nurse will:
  • Transition from advanced beginner nurse to competent independent professional nurse in the clinical environment

  • After completing the 6 or 12-month residency program, residents will transition to a full-time, permanent job as a Registered Nurse in either the ICU, ED or CIVCU.

Competency assessments

Competency assessments are conducted throughout the program in partnership with the clinical education department, Emergency Department, CIVCU and the Critical Care Unit (CCU) to determine the individual's competency levels and graduation trajectory.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Prepared to sit for New York State RN Licensure Boards within 6 month from date of hire
  • Maintains a current New York State Professional RN License
  • BSN strongly preferred
  • BLS certification current
  • ACLS validation within six (6) months
  • PALs certification within one (1) year (for ED)
  • All current ED employees, external hires and transfers will complete and maintain the National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification (NIHSS) within six (6) months from date of hire/transfer with recertification every two (2) years

EXPERIENCE
  • Participation as student nurse in Advanced Partnership Unit with CH preferred

  • Physical activity includes: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions, and heavy work
