Summary:

The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Nursing Supervisor under the direction of the NICU NM, is responsible for the overall coordination and supervision of patient care, planning, priority setting, coordination and evaluation of programs designated for the patient population in the NICU. The NICU Nurse Supervisor provides leadership and clinical support with 24-hour responsibility for the human resource and outcome management/performance, shared governance model, Unit Practice Council focusing on quality patient care and patient safety. The supervisor promotes a culture of fairness, respect; compassion and honesty, along with individual accountability, while assuring that compliance to the standards of care of the department from all members of the team are being met. The supervisor works cohesively with the unit Nurse Manager. The NICU Nurse Supervisor supports and assists with the implementation of new initiatives. The NICU Nurse Supervisor will assume a charge role or nursing assignment on the unit when needed. The NICU Supervisor will assume leadership duties in the absence of the NM.

Responsibilities:

Educational Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Maintains a current New York State Professional RN License.
  • Bachelor Degree in Nursing Baccalaureate in Nursing required or must be actively enrolled in BSN program with completion within three (3) years of assignment
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification validation required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification validation required within 6 months
  • NCC-Electronic Fetal Monitoring certification required within one year
  • Meets and is current and competent with all New York State licensure requirements, not limited to Infection Control and mandatory reporting

Experience Requirements:

  • 3 Years NICU experience
  • Charge Nurse, Managerial or Supervisory experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability with strong critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to perform technical aspects of job with unit-based equipment.
  • Computer literate with understanding of Microsoft products.
  • Ability to work in a high stress environment
