Work Schedule: Days and Evenings with Call Weekend and Holiday Rotation

Hours: Primarily Monday-Friday 6a-2p / 7a-3p / 8a-4p; hours may vary

Summary:

The Pharmacy Purchaser works closely with the Lead Pharmacist and Pharmacy Manager to ensure the efficient procurement of pharmaceuticals and supplies from wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers, and internal system sources. The Pharmacy Purchaser strictly follows department and system pharmacy purchasing policies and adheres to established accounting procedures and documentation, including invoice processing, contract compliance, purchase order creation, and pharmaceutical restocking. They work with GPO/Wholesaler representatives to assure participation in various savings opportunities, agreements, letters of commitment and contracts and enter these programs into the Catholic Health Risk Management Software. They assure appropriate credentials of all drug sources and actively participate in system purchasing meetings and other committees or work groups as needed. They also take an active role in managing drug shortages from a supply standpoint, working directly with pharmacy management. They also participate in the hospital's drug recall program and the outdate tracking and coordinate the reverse distribution process. They work closely with the Catholic Health 340B program manager and analyst to ensure program compliance is maintained. The Pharmacy Purchaser is also involved as needed in basic warehouse functions such as unpacking and stocking shipments, scanning items into the information systems, and distributing inventory to other departments and locations. The Pharmacy Purchaser is also proficient in generating reports related to utilization, cost, and contract compliance. They actively contribute to establishing and monitoring par levels as part of the inventory management program. In furtherance of efforts referenced above, the Pharmacy Purchaser maintains strong relationships with vendors, wholesalers and GPO representatives.

In addition to procurement responsibilities, the Pharmacy Purchaser provides oversight and guidance to purchasing assistants and other department personnel involved in supply chain functions. This includes tasks such as receiving, restocking, and organizing the storeroom.

The role of the Pharmacy Purchaser also extends to budget management. They assist in monitoring ongoing budget compliance, participate in budget preparation with management, and assist in providing justifications for budget variances.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Associates Degree required
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • 3 years of full time experience as a purchaser that includes experience in supply chain management activities including ordering, electronically receiving shipments, processing invoices, distribution, report creation/generation and review. Pharmacy or health care related purchasing experience preferred

OR

  • 2 years of full time experience as a Pharmacy Purchaser or Purchasing Assistant in the practice of all the above supply chain responsibilities

OR

  • 2 years of experience as a Pharmacy Technician plus 1 (one) full time Purchaser with experience in supply chain management activities as noted above
  • * All above experience must be current or not longer than a 2 year interval since having been acquired.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to operate office equipment, personal computer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, hospital information systems, automated dispensing units and various other types of pharmacy automation
  • Familiarity with various office based computer programs such as Microsoft office - specifically document creation and use of spreadsheets
  • Routine clerical skills, analytical ability, ability to interpret data and draw conclusions
  • Proficient at report generation from various information systems
  • Knowledge of metric system
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently and prioritize ongoing activities
  • Proficient in data entry
  • Ability to work in warehouse setting with high level of physical activity
