Job Description

Status: Per Diem Facility: Mercy Hospital of Buffalo

Work Schedule: Nights Shift: 3:

Exempt from Overtime: Exempt: No FTE: 0.100000: Bargaining Unit: CWA Local 1133

Summary:


Performs prescribed procedures of the sleep laboratory under the direction of the designated Medical Director in accordance with established policies, practices and standards. Prepares work area for receiving patients, including equipment setup, and verifies equipment and computers are in working order. Welcomes patients and families and puts patients at ease by thoroughly explaining how testing will proceed, including the treatment intervention, and the morning discharge process. Performs testing and treatment as indicated by the patient's condition and age specific policy. Discharges the patient, cleans wires, equipment, and prepares testing area for the next patient. May be required to perform both acquisition and scoring of sleep studies, as well as scheduling, obtaining prior authorizations, and following admission criteria. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Responsibilities:


EDUCATION
  • Must have a minimum of an Associate's Degree in Respiratory Therapy, from an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist, and must be kept current
  • Must possess valid New York State Respiratory Therapist License to practice Respiratory Therapy
  • Must complete and pass American Association for Sleep Medicine (AASM) A-step self-study modules within twelve (12) months of hire
  • Must become Registered Polysomnographic Technician within eighteen (18) months of hire
  • BLS certification required

EXPERIENCE
  • Pre-hire Experience: One (1) year previous respiratory and/or sleep preferred
  • Post-hire Experience: Orientation and training to the essential functions of the position is expected to be completed during the introduction period

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
  • Must possess good interpersonal, communication and customer service skills
  • Must be able to complete work independently
  • Must respond appropriately to medical conditions of patients
  • Must possess the ability to assess/interpret patient data and draw appropriate conclusions
  • Required to work with computers, medical devices, and be able to troubleshoot variances in equipment performance

WORKING CONDITIONS


  • There may be exposure to infectious diseases, blood, or body fluids
  • Works with and may apply oxygen
  • Works with and moves equipment, stocks supplies, and keeps the area clean
  • May require lifting and positioning of patients and occasional use of Hoyer lifts
