To be accepted into the CCU/ICU Internship Program all candidates must: Be licensed registered nurse with a minimum of six (6) months of recent acute care hospital experience. Recent is defined as in the past two (2) years. Be able to commit to and work full-time for the length of the internship program. Upon completion of the program, the intern will move to their authorized hours and shifts. Commit to flexibility in meeting scheduling requirements as part of the program in order to obtain optimal learning. This involves working all shifts. The intern will not be scheduled more than (2) different shifts in a payroll week unless mutually agreed upon by management and the affected employee. Successfully complete all the classroom and clinical components and demonstrate proficiency in expected skills, meet unit level expectations. During the course of the program the nursing intern will be expected to rotate shifts, work weekends and assume call responsibilities with mentor support. The Emergency Department Internship will be eight (8) full time weeks in duration.


  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing required
  • RN licensure in New York State required
  • Must possess current BLS within sixty (60) days from time of placement and must have current
  • ACLS within twelve (12) months from time of placement.
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) preferred

  • Six (6) months of recent acute care hospital experience as a Registered Nurse required. Recent is defines as in the past two (2) years.

  • Exposed to infection from disease-bearing specimens; a variety of electromechanical hazards; odorous chemicals and specimens; housekeeping cleaning agents/chemicals; hazardous anesthetic agents, body fluids and wastes; unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness); hot or noisy equipment
  • May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases; exposed to toxic chemicals due to photocopier
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
  • Subject to burns and cuts; injury from moving parts of equipment; varying and unpredictable situations; many interruptions
  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements
  • Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances
  • Handles emergency or crisis situations
  • May perform emergency care
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
  • Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries
  • Requires judgment/action which could result in death of patient
  • Required Protective Equipment:
  • Eye/face/mask protection may be required
  • Lab coat or apron may be required
  • Sterile/Non-Sterile medical gloves may be required
  • Utility Gloves may be required
  • Gowns/hair covering may be required

  • Hazards: conditions where there is danger to life, body, and/or health
