Bargaining Unit: SEIU Local 1199

Exempt from Overtime: Exempt: No

Work Schedule: Nights with Weekend and Holiday Rotation

Hours: Primarily 19:00-07:30 shift with rotations to 15:00-03:30 and 11:00-23:30 shifts

Summary:

To be accepted into the Emergency Room Nurse Internship Program all candidates must: Be licensed registered nurse with a minimum of one (1) year of recent acute care hospital experience. Recent is defined as in the past two (2) years. Be able to commit to and work full-time for the length of the internship program. Upon completion of the program, the intern will move to their authorized hours and shifts. Commit to flexibility in meeting scheduling requirements as part of the program in order to obtain optimal learning. This involves working all shifts. The intern will not be scheduled more than (2) different shifts in a payroll week unless mutually agreed upon by management and the affected employee. Successfully complete all the classroom and clinical components and demonstrate proficiency in expected skills, meet unit level expectations. During the course of the program the nursing intern will be expected to rotate shifts, work weekends and assume call responsibilities with mentor support. The Emergency Department Internship will be eight (8) full time weeks in duration.

Responsibilities:

EDUCATION
  • Licensed Registered Nurse with a minimum of one (1) year of recent acute care hospital experience. Recent is defined as in the past two (2) years.
  • Must possess current BLS within sixty (60) days from time of placement and must have current ACLS and PALS within twelve (12) months from time of placement.
  • Bachelor of Science (BSN) preferred

EXPERIENCE
  • One (1) years of recent Medical/Surgical experience as a Registered Nurse

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances
  • Exposed to: a variety of electro-mechanical hazards; odorous chemical and specimens; infection from disease-bearing specimens; hazards of handling diseased organs and tissues; hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment; Housekeeping/cleaning agents/chemicals; unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries and illness)
  • Flexibility in scheduled working hours/days to meet needs of unit
  • Handles: absentee replacement on short notice; emergency or crisis situations (potential patient violence)
  • May be exposed to: infections and contagious diseases; biohazardous, radioactive substances; toxic chemicals (i.e. photocopier)
  • May perform emergency care
  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant patient or unit elements
  • Occasional pressure due to multiple calls and inquires
  • Occasionally exposed to radiation hazards
  • Occasionally subjected to irregular hours
  • Requires judgement/action which could result in death of patient
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne diseases
  • Subject to many interruptions
  • Required Protective Equipment:
  • Eye/face protection may be required

  • Sterile/non-sterile medical gloves may be required
